In the 40+ years I've lived on this ball/plane we call Earth, I'd like to think that most of it has been pretty sweey, and in hindsight, it has been.
But of the times it's been pretty shit, it was always difficult to deal with. Now I won't bore you on all the bad things that have happened to me, this isn't about whose life has been the hardest, although whenever my thoughts go down this path, I always think of something Joe Rogan has said a bunch of times on his podcast
"the worst thing that has happened to you, is the worst thing that has happened to you"
And so whenever I get into these unpleasant situations, crappy thoughts that occupy my head, make me angry, nervous, anxious, violent, I use these 3 sayings to try and right my ship. I can't say they work everytime, but they work more often than not. And you cant say or think it just once, it has to be constant, over and over again, till the dark cloud in your thinking starts to not be so dark.
"This too, shall pass"
A friend tought me this. JG, thank you, I've remembered this from the time you spoke about it. Quick, short, easy to remember and straight to the point. Easily repeatable I've used this countless times when I can feel my anxiety start to kick in. Commit this to memory.
"Everything IS, HAS and ALWAYS WILL BE ok"
I think I first heard this on a Jim Fortin course I did. It stuck straight away. I like the past, present, future vibe of it. Well, present, past, future in this instance. Pretty similar to the first saying, but with a fortune telling ending of hope.
"I've lived through some terrible things in my life. Some of which actually happened" - Mark Twain
This is by far my favourite quote. I tell it to everyone that needs to hear it and to myself often. It sums up everything perfectly, and if you don't quite understand it, the jist of it is this.
When you're anxious about a situation, your mind likes to play scenarios in your head ("I've lived through some terrible things...") Unfortunately these scenes are usually negative and can be extreme, making you feel worse. The reality of the situation is almost always not as bad as your mind makes it out to be ("some of which actually happened")
The take away here is to try and stop thinking about worst case scenarios, or if you simply can't, remind yourself that it most likely won't happen that way.
These 3 sayings have kept me sane. And when I find more, I'll be sure to share.
